Understanding Prayer

Prayer is communication with God, not just a religious ritual
It's a two-way conversation that transforms both us and our circumstances
Philippians 4:6-7 provides a blueprint for effective prayer
Prayer connects our finite humanity with God's infinite power

Types of Prayer

Adoration

Worship-focused prayer focusing on God's character and attributes

  • Puts God in His proper place
  • Foundation for all prayer
  • Focuses on who God is

Confession

Acknowledging our sins and shortcomings before God

  • Creates humility
  • Opens way for forgiveness
  • Maintains spiritual health

Thanksgiving

Expressing gratitude for God's blessings and provision

  • Counters negativity
  • Recognizes God as source
  • Builds faith-filled mindset

Supplication

Asking for our needs and interceding for others

  • Should be specific
  • Includes intercession
  • Aligns with God's will

God's Promises About Prayer

He Hears Us

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." 1 John 5:14

Open Door Policy

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." Matthew 7:7

Peace That Guards

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7
